The high mountain climate and rugged terrain make the East Kootenay region of British Columbia an ideal place to spend the next week fly-fishing for a wide variety of rainbow trout.
Today we are joined by our friends, master fly-fisherman Peter Morrison and still-water expert and author Brian Chan, as we head out in pursuit of Whiteswan Lake’s famous Gerard Rainbow.  There are no inflated egos - and no inflated boats!

EP 102 - Whiteswan Lake
East Kootenays, BC
Activity: On Tour
The incredible Rocky Mountains provide a great test for our camping and fishing skills, as we spend the week getting to know the lakes around the East Kootenay region of B.C.
Peter Morrison and Brian Chan, the best fly-fishing instructors a girl could have, are
braving the changing mountain weather with us in search of some exciting Whiteswan Lake trout.
Today’s recipe for success?  A bunch of Chronomids, a distressed damsel, and a delectable little thing?

EP 103 – Premier Lake
East Kootenays, BC
Activity: On Tour
On the East side of the Kootenay River Valley, just in from the small town of Skookumchuk, we found Premier Lake Provincial Park.  This fabulous area will be home base for the next few days of our tour, as we fish some of the spectacular lakes nearby.  Today we hope to hit the bite with some of the local Premier Lake rainbow.
Along for the fun are hearty souls and happy anglers Brian Chan and Peter Morrison.
The weather has turned on us, and we have to remind ourselves that this is summer in the Rockies.  It’s wildly unpredictable, kind of like the fishing!

EP 104 - Premier Lake
East Kootenays, BC
Activity: On Tour
Day Four of our East Kootenays tour finds us in the shadow of the magnificent Rocky Mountains, camping at popular Premier Lake Provincial Park.  Along with Bighorn Sheep, Elk and deer, the park’s 5 lakes offer up a variety of large rainbow, chunky brook trout, and small cutthroat.
Fishing friends Brian Chan and Peter Morrison are here to help us get our hooks into some fresh and frisky trout – but the cold weather could just mean a skunky smell for someone.

EP 105 - 'Zippermouth Lakes'
East Kootenays, BC
Activity: On Tour
Camping at Premier Lake Provincial Park is a great base for fishing many of the smaller lakes in the area around the Kootenay River Valley.  Today we hit the serious 4 wheel trails in search of one of the East Kootenays famous ‘zipper mouth lakes’, and hopefully some giant rainbow trout.
Sworn to secrecy are fishing buddies and angling experts Peter Morrison and Brian Chan, who are here to help us coax some of these hidden beauties up to the surface.  So close your eyes, as we lead you into a high mountain fish hideout!

EP 106 - Whitetail Lake
East Kootenays, BC
Activity: On Tour
One week, 4 fishing friends, 4 great lakes, and a lifetime of memories.  Today our tour of the East Kootenays – draws to close.
It’s our final day of fishing on our week long tour, but we plan to go out in style.  From our base at Premier Lake Provincial Park, we traveled north past Canal Flats to gorgeous Whitetail Lake.
Our fly fishing guru Brian Chan has made a change of destinations, as the word on the water is that the action is hot at Whitetail.  Along with master caster Peter Morrison, Shelley and I plan to set the hook into a number of trophy rainbow.  The fishing’s hot and so is the weather.  Could it get any better than this?

EP 107 – West Coast Fishing Club
Queen Charlotte Islands, BC
Activity: Langara lighthouse
Today Shelley and I are happy to be in the famous fishing grounds north of the Queen Charlotte Islands.  We are staying at the Clubhouse, one of the West Coast Fishing Club Lodges located on beautiful Langara Island.
Langara is the first stop on the migratory path of the Pacific chinook, coho, and chum salmon as they journey from the Arctic feeding grounds to their spawning grounds in the Pacific Northwest.  This means spectacular fishing for all - equaled only by the scenery.
On this trip, we’ll be in good hands – we are fishing with one of West Coast fishing Club’s senior guides, Masset local Eddie Chutter.

EP 108 – West Coast Fishing Club
Queen Charlotte Islands, BC
Activity: Orcas by the dozen
This week finds us nestled away in the luxurious confines of West Coast Fishing Club’s Langara Island ‘Clubhouse’.  The incredible natural scenery of Canada’s West Coast is no more evident than here, on the northern end of the Queen Charlotte Islands.  There’s one reason people come here to fish every summer – trophy Chinook, and lots of them.  But keep your eyes open, because chances are you may see some killer sea life of a much larger variety!

EP 109 - Fraser River Lodge /Pitt River
Chilliwack, BC
Activity: Chilliwack Corn Maze
Located just over an hour from Vancouver, beautiful Fraser River Lodge sits quietly at the edge of the mighty river, tucked away amongst the mountains and farmland of the upper Fraser Valley.  The lodge is uniquely located to provide a variety of fishing experiences, including salmon, trout, steelhead and sturgeon.
The Fraser is fed by numerous lakes, streams and tributaries along the valley, and today  Shelley and I are going to be fly fishing one of these small rivers, as we jet our way up the narrow channels in search of some bull trout, dolly varden, and maybe a frisky chinook.

Ep 110 - Fraser River Lodge/Sturgeon
Chilliwack, BC
Activity: winery tour
A pleasant drive from Vancouver has brought us to the spacious confines of gorgeous Fraser River Lodge.  This custom built log building beckons anglers from around the Fraser Valley, and all parts of the globe.
The only lodge on the lower Fraser River, it is uniquely situated to provide a wide variety of fishing experiences, but the most unique and popular of these is Sturgeon – the dinasours of the deep.
Today Shelley and I are going to be fishing with guide John Waring as we try and pull ourselves a ‘clunker’ from the murky waters of the mighty Fraser River.

Ep 111 - Eagle Manor Resort
Quatsino Sound, BC
Activity: Snorkeling the Campbell River
Today we are visiting Incredible Quatsino Sound, home to historic Eagle Manor Resort, a perfectly placed access point to the plentiful fishing grounds off Vancouver Island’s west coast.  Big Chinook are our goal, but there are many other fish to be found in the sometimes heavy swells of the Pacific.
Big Waves and Big Fish are the order of the day, and while Shelley tries to land the fish, Courtney will try not to feed them.

Ep 112 - Eagle Manor Resort
Quatsino Sound, BC
Activity: Kayaking
The tiny and picturesque hamlet of Quatsino is our departure point today as we motor out of the sound and into the rich waters of the Pacific Ocean.  We are staying at historic Eagle Manor, a great jumping off point for the wide variety of water based activities available here in this ocean playground.
Expectations are high, and there’s a gut feeling that the abundant waters off the northern end of Vancouver Island will not deny us.  Let’s hope that’s the only feeling gut feeling we’ll experience.

EP 113 – Skaha Lake/Small Mouth Bass
Penticton, BC
Activity: Penticton Speed Way -Race cars
It’s the middle of summer, it’s HOT-HOT-HOT, and Shelley and I have made our way to the watersports playground of Penticton, BC.  Located in the semi-arid desert that is the Okanogan Valley, Penticton is the perfect place to play on the water.  And today, we’re headed out on Skaha lake to try and play ourselves some small mouth bass.
And when the day’s fishing is done, it is time for some fun.  Penticton offers a wide variety of activities, but it’s the competition at the track that really gets our motors running!

EP 114 – Dolphin’s Resort/Heli Fishing
Campbell River, BC
Activity: Grizzly Bear watching
Campbell River is well known as one of Vancouver Island’s finest fishing hotspots, and today we have the privilege of fishing out of beautiful Dolphins Resort.
Our guide, Dolphin’s owner Clint Cameron, has a special treat in mind.  First off, there’s no boat, and did somebody mention grizzly bears?
Shelley and I are going to be sky-high as we take a heli trip into remote Knights Inlet and the Kleena Kleane River System for some pristine bar fishing, a glacial lunch stop, and some close encounters with natures best fisherman.  Here’s hoping we’re not on the menu.

EP 115 – Dolphin’s Resort/Pinks
Campbell River, BC
Activity: Museum at Campbell River
It was an inauspicious start to what we hoped would be a great day of fishing in the plentiful waters of Campbell River, BC.  After an early morning ferry from Vancouver, Shelley and I had made the short drive up the Island highway until we hit world famous Dolphin’s Resort, our weekend destination.
Campbell River is famous for salmon, the story being that they were once so plentiful you could walk across the channel on their backs!  We met our guide, Bob MacKenzie, at the Dolphin’s dock, hoping he could hook us up with some pinks on the spin.

EP 116 – West Coast Fishing Club/Salmon
Queen Charlotte Islands, BC
Activity: Haida Artists
The incredible natural scenery of Canada’s West Coast and a late season salmon run has brought us back to the Queen Charlotte Islands - and the luxurious confines of West Coast Fishing Club’s Langara Island ‘Clubhouse’.
This trip promises plenty of coho, chum, Chinook and a lesson in Haida carving and culture.  The flight in from Masset was a smooth one, and Shelley and I are ready to put guide Eddie Chutter to the test.

EP 117 – West Coast Fishing Club/Halibut & Salmon
Queen Charlotte Islands, BC
Activity: The Clubhouse
It’s September in the Pacific Northwest, and we’re visiting the West Coast Fishing Club’s ‘Clubhouse’ up in the Queen Charlotte Islands.  That means weather, all kinds, but hopefully it also means fish.  Today guide Eddie Chutter is taking us out in search of some tasty Halibut, and later we may try our luck in the plentiful salmon grounds off Langara Island.  It’s the last day of the season – let’s hope it’s a good one!

EP 118 – Malbaie River Outfitters/Atlantic Salmon
Gaspe, PQ
Activity: Sightseeing
The onset of cool weather on Canada’s east coast means a change of seasons is underway, but on Quebec’s Gaspe peninsula, it also means big Atlantic Salmon.
While I stayed home and nursed a nasty cold, Shelley headed across country to the small town of Gaspe, and nearby Malbaie River Outfitters. Lodge owner Bill Greiner has many local rivers to choose from, but today he and Shelley are heading out on the York to cast for some fly-shy Atlantic salmon on the move up river to their spawning grounds.
The leaves have yet to turn, but with a bit of luck and a tasty fly, let’s hope the fish will.

EP 119 – Malbaie River Outfitters/Atlantic Salmon
Gaspe, PQ
Activity: Sightseeing
It’s the middle of autumn on Quebec’s Gaspe Peninsula, and the cooler temperatures mean that things should be heating up on the local rivers.
Shelley is flying solo on this one, as she’s made her way to the Gaspe to try her luck casting for elusive Atlantic Salmon.  Along with Malbaie River Outfitters owner Bill Greiner and guide Tony Callahan Shelley hits the York and St Jean Rivers in pursuit of these huge but fickle fish.  The air is crisp with a hint of wood smoke, but a long day of casting could just bring about that most unpleasant of fishing smells – the smell of getting skunked!

EP 120 – Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society with Rick Hansen
Mission, BC
Activity: Gulf of Georgia Cannery
It’s early November in Vancouver, cold and rainy - a perfect time to go Dinasour hunting! Today Shelley and I are going to search the depths of the Fraser River for more info – and hopefully a peak - at the mysterious sturgeon, the dinosaurs of the deep. But to understand where we are today, we’ve got to take a look back at the fishing history on the Fraser river nearly a century ago.  Then we’ll head out with avid sturgeon conservationist Rick Hansen, who I think has made a little history himself!

EP 121 – Nature Trust (Special)
Englishman River, BC
Activity: Tyee Pool Fishing
There’s no doubt about it – we love to fish.  And even though we may not always catch something, it’s still good to know that they’re down there – somewhere!  But we can’t just take that for granted, as fish numbers are down in many parts of British Columbia – and the world.  There are lots of reasons why this happens, but today we’re going to take a look at one of the ways to reverse that trend.  It all has to start somewhere, and for thousands of steelhead and other species, that place is the Englishman River.

EP 122 – Whistler
Whistler, BC
Activity: Tube Park
When the snow starts to fall, the slopes call.  Shelley and I love to strap on the boards as much as anyone, but winter time in Whistler BC also means some hot action on the local rivers.  Guide Steve McPhail
When were done freezing out tooshies off along the banks of the ….., we’re gonna stick them in some inner tubes and bounce down the banks of snow at Whistler’s tube park!  We love punishment!

EP 123 – Whistler
Whistler, BC

When the day is done, we’ll replace the zip of the line and reel with a crazy treetop ride on the Whistler mountain ZipTrek!
